  • I read a book while in jail for consuming, by choice, illegal chemicals like cocaine and heroin as opposed to the LEGAL chemicals in our air that I would rather NOT ingest like the mercury, formaldehyde, lead arsenic etc like we get from fossil fuels, and it was entitled "Fast Food Nation"..... other than the abhorrent things described by John here, this book pointed out that chicken feces were fed to cattle and cattle feces were fed to chickens that were being sold for human consumption......and people wonder why i go for that silly "free range" hoax food.

  • My food processing job has changed their policy on sick days duriing this pandemic. They started penalizing us for taking them, while there is covid spreading through our plant. Oh yeah, and someone died last week. He was in his mid 40s. Left his wife and kid behind. Terrible.

  • I work in an industry that had to cut production due to covid. Our customers are super pissed about the lack of supply. Imagine $10/pound prices for chicken that is rarely even available. How would the public react to that? You can reduce production, sure, but people will have to eat less also. Try telling people they can't eat because the producers can't produce. Let me know who that goes over.

In ANY other first world country the factory would be shut down until a proper inspection was passed AND fined massively on top of that. This is absolutely absurd!

  • Let's not beat around the bush either: Meatpacking employees are just one segment of the employed who have suffered and been denied compensation during the pandemic. You also have your grocery cashiers/stockmen/sales associates, your public transit workers, your mail carriers/package delivery specialists, and a whole slew of other workers. I mean Kroger is choosing to close stores rather than follow through with local laws demanding hazard pay for workers being exposed to a deadly infection that has killed more than 500,000 people in America when Kroger's minimum wage is a paltry sub $15 an hour.

  • There was a liquid nitrogen leak at a poultry plant in Gainesville, GA, earlier this year. It killed six people, but a lot of the immigrant workers didn't seek medical help. In fact, they fled the site for fear of deportation. This plant, though, had received 12 OSHA violations in 2015 alone (including two employees losing fingers), and more all the way up to 2020. I haven't heard anything else about this plant or the incident or what happened to the employees who didn't seek help since then. I suspect I never will. • What are people's opinions on what should be done as an individual to make their lives better? Regulations on limits they can impose on workers? The demand for meat is very high (I imagine) so they would need to hire more to meet it but do they have the budget to do so? With regulations in place, would this force some number people in the country into veganism if it increases the price of meat? Maybe automation of some sort becomes a thing or plant based meats explode at this point if it becomes quickly manufacturable, where do the workers go?

  • A fact to think about: George Duhamel already wrote exactly about this terrible part of American culture (and other parts) way back in 1930; in his book 'America the menace'... Just a few people with really much money rule a crazy lot. Liberalism and democracy in the last 100 years are only a veil of maya used by oligarchs to make us believe we are free, so we sell our ancient cultures, social processes, relations and our souls, just for pleasure and convenience. And oversight? A nice word, part of the veil, because its meaning can be bought to, which they do... You want change? Make sure you have some. If you do, then you'll probably don't want is anymore. That is why most things in the long run will not really change in this now Americanized Western and so called liberal culture: Power is addictive... for the few. And so is the pleasure and convenience... for the masses.

  • Thank you, John Oliver, for highlighting another important and under-reported topic! I agree that this topic is NOT talked about enough, and would argue that the animals suffering at meat plants are also NOT talked about enough. The food industry is horrendous at every corner, and what is coming to light in your footage is beyond appalling. I wonder if people who watch this continue their meat consumption as usual, or if some consumers are changing and eat less of these inhumanely-processed products.

  • John Oliver does a pretty excellent job with his sarcastic presentation of some pretty serious issues to consider. I, for one, will never buy another Tyson Meat product until I hear that the company has corrected the error of its ways. (I'm not holding my breath on that one.) The staff cuts at OSHA and the IRS, to name just a couple of government agencies, were initiated under Republican presidencies. Banging the "smaller government" gong, they cut a shitload of positions that check on various industries and taxpayers... and so what do you expect to happen after that? If nobody's looking, those not being checked go off the grid in their illegal activities. The heads of major corporations donate a boatload of dough to GOP candidates across the nation because they know they'll get something for their money. It's "Pay to Play" and it works... so it continues.

  • The weirdest thing is when people place it on public media this is their working condition and almost nobody politically cares. I know a lot of Americans hate Government and lobby against as little Government control 99% of the time. But if a company can act like this you can use your government to enforce government to have at least some form of ethics. Companies won't do that, they have no incentive. Just a tiny little bit of ethics instead of this absolutely low bar. That's what we do in my European Capitalistic country.

When they seek their own doctor is one way, because then they have something called a Second Opinion. Must be known in America but isn't used very much in these insituations. We have even created a better system in Europe which you can use. We have Independent Doctors, they are not allowed to work for one side or the other or they get COMPLETELY DESTROYED. Their careers or companies are over. As soon as there is a wif of favoritism you can go against them personally. Still doesn't work perfectly. But better than a useless doctor from the company who will 100% work against you. Company doctors, you should never trust.

  • This is the most important post you will ever read. Every one of us has sinned against God. We’ve lied, we’ve stolen, we’ve sinned sexually, and we’ve taken His name in vain; which makes us liars, thieves, fornicators and blasphemers.. Yet this is only four of our many transgressions. The problem is, we can never ‘outweigh’ our sin with good deeds because God is perfect in Holiness, meaning his standard is beyond our reach. He is also perfect in Justice, meaning, he will bring EVERY sin to light. The punishment for our sin is death, and Hell; a place of Eternal Fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Fortunately God is also perfect in Love, so 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ left his throne in heaven and came to this earth. While here, he lived a perfectly righteous life, only to take the punishment that We deserved; Our sinless creator became Our sin, and endured a gruesome death on a cross for our sake. Right before he died, he said ‘it is finished’.. meaning, the debt for our sins has been paid in full. And on the third day, he defeated death and rose from the grave. So now, we can go free from the wrath of God’s judgement not by earning it, but rather, as a free gift of grace.. Except gifts can be either accepted or rejected. So this is what you must do in response; Humbly admit to God that you have sinned against him, and through gratitude in the sacrifice of his son, repent (turn away) from your old way of life. Then, confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, your savior, and the ruler of your life from this moment forward (Romans 10:9). Do these things, and you will be saved. If you do so sincerely, God will grant you a new heart which no longer finds comfort in sin, but instead desires to read and obey his word. He will also grant you Eternal life in his presence; The greatest pleasure on earth doesn’t even come close to what God is preparing for believers in the afterlife. You’ve been informed; Now the choice is yours. What you do with this information will determine where you spend ETERNITY, meaning, this is the single most critical decision you will EVER make; And all of us here, whether believer or atheist, know deep down that every last word here is true. Jesus Christ awaits YOU this very moment. Don’t even think about sleeping tonight until you surrender your life to him, because your tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.. And as it is written (Hebrews 9 : 27); ‘It is appointed unto man ONCE to die, but after this, THE JUDGMENT’ . All glory, honor and praise to Lord Jesus Christ.

  • A bit more protection for workers won't cut it. Not by a long shot. We got a lot more workers protection in Germany. And yet there we had multiple Meat-Factories with similar problems. Especially some with massive Covid-19 outbreaks. Outbreaks that only made the terrible working conditions in those Factories of Companies like Tönnies know to the public. Non of Germanys regulations however helped in those cases. Leading me to my point: You cannot assure that the workers in a company will have the best possible working conditions if you do not give control of the company to the workers.
